Kyle Gawley

Belfast founder of Gravity SaaS boilerplate, Alertly and the Zero To Paid course

About Kyle Gawley

Kyle Gawley is a software developer and founder from Belfast, Northern Ireland, best known for Gravity, a Node.js and React SaaS boilerplate that gives founders authentication, Stripe billing, an admin dashboard and native mobile apps out of the box. Gravity has been sold to more than 1,200 developers, and Kyle reports over £440K in total sales from it.

Before Gravity they co-founded Get Invited with fellow Ulster University design graduate David Turner. It began as a master's degree project, became a venture-backed online event ticketing service, and by Kyle's account served about 21,000 event organisers and processed more than £3M. A serious health crisis while running that high-growth, VC-funded company pushed them toward a calmer, bootstrapped way of working, a story they told on the Indie Hackers podcast.

They launched Gravity on Indie Hackers in January 2019 as a free Node.js boilerplate with a $99 premium tier and have developed it continuously since, later adding a Next.js edition, React Native apps and a How To Build a SaaS video course. They also offer SaaS development and fractional CTO services through their company Gravity Zero Ltd.

Their newer projects are Alertly, an AI-filtered social listening tool for B2B teams, and Zero To Paid, a video course on customer acquisition for developers. They say they have made more than $1M from selling their own software.

How Kyle builds

  • Bootstrapped, calm growth beats the pressure of venture-backed hypergrowth.
  • Developers should not rebuild auth and billing for every new SaaS.
  • Maintain a product continuously and fix bugs quickly to earn long-term trust.
  • Developers can learn sales and marketing; distribution is a skill, not a talent.
