About Derrick Reimer

Derrick Reimer is a software developer and serial bootstrapped SaaS founder best known for SavvyCal, a scheduling tool designed to take the awkwardness out of sending someone a booking link. SavvyCal's signature feature lets the recipient overlay their own calendar on the sender's availability, a positioning choice he arrived at by asking what a successful product like Calendly got wrong for a subset of users.

Before SavvyCal he was the technical co-founder of Drip, the email marketing automation platform he started with Rob Walling in late 2012, and stayed until Leadpages acquired it in 2016. On the side he built Codetree, a project management layer on top of GitHub Issues, which he sold in 2016 for about $128K, and later StaticKit, a toolkit of dynamic components for static sites, which was acquired in 2020. He also spent a year building Level, a calmer Slack alternative, before publicly walking away from it in 2019 and open-sourcing its Elixir and Elm codebase.

He wrote the first line of SavvyCal in March 2020, launched it that September, finished as Product Hunt's number two product of the month in January 2021, and passed $10K MRR in April 2021 and $20K MRR by October 2021. The company took a small investment from TinySeed and a few angels, favours organic growth, and is run by a small team. For more than 200 episodes he co-hosted The Art of Product podcast with Ben Orenstein, and he writes essays on shipping small, finding bootstrappable ideas and choosing a tech stack.

How Derrick builds

  • Aim for a calm, durable, profitable business.
  • Pick markets where one person can say yes, not a whole company.
  • Look for successful products with critical flaws for a subset of users.
  • Ship small and ship fast; build for a handful of committed early users first.
  • Use the tech stack you already know best.
