Pinboard
pinboard.in
Paid bookmarking and archiving service focused on speed, privacy and personal organization with tags.
Founder and sole operator of the Pinboard bookmarking service since 2009
Maciej Cegłowski is a Polish-American programmer and writer who founded Pinboard, a paid, no-frills social bookmarking service, in July 2009. Pinboard started with a small signup fee that rose slightly with each new user, became his full-time job early on and grew in waves as users fled the declining Delicious; by 2011 it had about 25,000 registered users while remaining a one-person company.
In 2015 Pinboard moved to an annual fee, and in June 2017 it acquired Delicious, its former rival, shutting down new saves there and offering users a path to migrate. Wikipedia lists Pinboard's operating income at around $228K a year for 2024, and the service remains active.
Cegłowski is also well known for essays and talks at his site Idle Words on the web industry, surveillance and website bloat, and for a deliberately anti-growth stance captured in Pinboard's tagline urging others not to compete with it. More recently he has been writing a weekly newsletter about Mars.
