Founder of Indie Hackers, the community and podcast that named the movement
Courtland Allen is the founder of Indie Hackers, the website, community and podcast that popularized the term 'indie hacker' for people building profitable online businesses on their own terms. An MIT graduate, Y Combinator alum and self-taught designer and full-stack developer, he launched IndieHackers.com in August 2016 as a collection of transparent interviews in which founders shared their revenue numbers and how they got there.
The site took off almost immediately. In April 2017, less than a year after launch, Stripe acquired Indie Hackers and his brother Channing joined as co-founder. The brothers spent six years building it inside Stripe, adding a large founder forum, newsletter and the Indie Hackers podcast, which became one of the best-known shows about bootstrapping. In March 2023 they spun Indie Hackers back out as an independent company, with Stripe staying on as a seed investor.
Allen still designs and builds much of the site himself. His interviews and talks return to a few themes: start small, keep costs low, ship quickly, and above all don't quit — staying in the game long enough is what gives a business the chance to work.
