Co-founder of CodePen, ShopTalk Show co-host, ran CSS-Tricks 2007-2022

About Chris Coyier

Chris Coyier is a web designer, writer and co-founder of CodePen, the browser-based front-end editor and social community for sharing HTML, CSS and JavaScript demos. He is also known for building CSS-Tricks, one of the most widely read web development publications, which he ran from 2007 to 2022.

CSS-Tricks began in 2007 as one of several blog experiments and became the one that stuck. It was funded by sponsorships and ad networks, and over time Chris added staff writers and editors. In 2022 DigitalOcean approached him and acquired the site to complement its developer content; he said the deal was fair and that it let him focus fully on CodePen.

CodePen launched in 2012, co-founded with Alex Vazquez and Tim Sabat, whom he met as early design and development hires at Wufoo. The three are equal co-founders, and CodePen runs on a freemium model with a paid Pro tier. Chris has described it as the biggest project of his career and one he could not run alone, unlike CSS-Tricks.

He also co-hosts ShopTalk Show, a long-running podcast about front-end web design and development, with Dave Rupert, and co-wrote the self-published book Digging Into WordPress with Jeff Starr. He lives in Bend, Oregon.

Chris wanted to give CodePen his full attention and lacked the time to scale the site further. DigitalOcean could put a whole community and content team behind it and look after it well.
