About Shawn Wang (swyx)

Shawn Wang, known online as swyx, is a developer, writer and community builder who splits his time between San Francisco and Singapore. A former finance professional who switched careers into software, he popularised the idea of learning in public with an essay that became a reference point for developers building their careers online.

In 2020 he wrote The Coding Career Handbook in a twelve-week sprint, distilling his second-career journey into a practical guide for developers moving from junior to senior. He later became a central figure in the AI engineering scene, coining and promoting the term AI Engineer.

Swyx co-hosts the Latent Space podcast and newsletter, co-founded smol.ai (which publishes the AINews digest), and co-organises the AI Engineer conferences. He has also worked in developer relations roles at companies including Netlify, AWS, Temporal and Airbyte.
