Lovable
Fine for a notes app with auth and search.

Hard: Only a slice Only a slice. A personal notes app is easy; Notion's block editor, databases and realtime collaboration are years of work.
You can vibe code a Markdown notes app or a simple personal wiki in a day. Notion itself is a block-based editor where every block can be moved, nested, linked and turned into a database, edited by many people at once, with offline support, permissions and search. Those parts are deep engineering problems. Build a focused tool for one workflow you have; for general docs, an existing app (including local-first indie options) is better value.
Notion is an all-in-one workspace of block-based docs, wikis and databases with realtime collaboration and AI. This page is about building your own version for personal or internal use, or to learn how this kind of product works, not about copying Notion to compete with it. How we grade.
Difficulty is for a solo builder using an AI coding tool. Skip means not worth building yourself.
| Feature | Difficulty | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Markdown notes | Easy | A textarea or a ready-made editor component. |
| Search | Easy | Postgres full-text search is enough for personal use. |
| Rich text editor | Medium | Use Tiptap, Lexical or BlockNote rather than building one. |
| Nested pages and backlinks | Medium | Tree structure plus a links table. |
| Database views (table, board, calendar) | Hard | Relations, filters and formulas are each substantial. |
| Realtime collaboration | Hard | Use Yjs or a hosted service; still tricky to get right. |
| Page sharing and permissions | Medium | Per-page ACL checked on every read. |
| AI writing features | Medium | Easy to call an LLM API; cost control and data handling need care. |
| Offline mode | Skip | Local-first sync is a specialist area. |
Your own version vs Notion, at personal or small-team scale.
Plus: $10/mo/seat billed annually
Free for individuals; Plus is about $10 per seat a month billed yearly ($12 monthly) and Business about $20. The pricing page showed EUR 9.50 for Plus from our location.

| Running cost | Per month | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting | $0–$20 | Free or hobby tier. |
| Database and storage | $0–$25 | Free tier for personal notes. |
| Realtime service | $0–$25 | Only if you add multi-user editing. |
| AI API usage | $0–$10 | Pay per token if you add AI features. |
| Total | $0–$80/mo | Saves up to $120 a year vs Notion Plus per seat; at the top of the range it costs $840 a year more. |

Better for integrating an editor library and Yjs in a real codebase.
For iterating on the editor and data model with full code visibility.
Paste it into your tool, then ask for a plan before any code. Edit the specifics to match what you need.
Build a personal knowledge base app for me (single user first, maybe a few collaborators later). Features: - Nested pages (tree in a sidebar), each with a rich text editor using an existing block editor library (Tiptap or BlockNote), supporting headings, lists, to-dos, code blocks, images and slash commands. - [[Wiki links]] between pages with a backlinks panel. - Full-text search across titles and content. - One simple database type: a table of items with typed columns (text, select, date, checkbox) and a board view grouped by a select column. - Publish a page to a public read-only URL. - Export everything as Markdown. Data model: pages (id, owner_id, parent_id, title, content JSON, is_public, public_slug), links, tables, rows. Security: - Auth required; pages readable only by owner unless is_public, enforced server-side or with row level security. - Sanitize editor HTML on render, especially on public pages. - Image uploads go to private storage with signed URLs, size and type limits. - Public slugs are random, not page IDs.
AI tools often get these wrong by default. Check each one before anyone else uses the app.
They went far past the prototype: support, payments, reliability and years of iteration. Their profiles show what that took.

You learn how rich text editors model documents and why realtime collaboration needs CRDTs, which explains a lot about modern apps.
Hard. Only a slice. A personal notes app is easy; Notion's block editor, databases and realtime collaboration are years of work.
A working personal or internal MVP takes about 6 h–2 days with a tool like Lovable. A polished version you would rely on every day takes about 10–25 days, mostly spent on a block editor with nesting, drag and drop and slash commands.
Expect $0–$80/mo at personal or small-team scale (hosting, database and storage, realtime service, ai api usage). Notion Plus costs $10/mo/seat (checked 2026-11-03), so the most you would save is $120 a year, before counting your time.
You can build a notes or wiki app with a rich editor in a day or two. A real Notion clone with block-level databases and realtime collaboration is a long engineering project even with AI help.
AppFlowy, AFFiNE and Anytype are open-source workspaces. For local Markdown notes, Obsidian, built by a small independent team, is a popular choice.
Notion Plus is about $10 per seat a month billed yearly or $12 monthly, and Business about $20, checked on 2026-11-03. The page shows local currency, so prices vary by region.
Building your own tool that solves the same problem is common and generally fine. Copying Notion's code, design assets, brand name or content is not. Use your own name and design, respect their terms of service, and get proper advice if you plan to sell it. This page is not legal advice.
