Hard: Only a slice Drawing a signature on a PDF is easy to vibe code; producing a signature you could defend in a dispute is the hard part, and it is most of what DocuSign sells.
A page where someone types or draws their name over a PDF and you email back a copy can be built in a day. Legal weight under laws like the US ESIGN Act and the EU eIDAS regulation comes from intent to sign, consent to do business electronically, signer identity checks, a tamper-evident final document and a detailed audit trail. For your own low-stakes agreements a simple build can work; for contracts that matter, use a maintained e-signature tool, including the indie ones below.
DocuSign is electronic signature platform for sending documents, collecting signatures and keeping a legally defensible audit trail. This page is about building your own version for personal or internal use, or to learn how this kind of product works, not about copying DocuSign to compete with it. How we grade.
Difficulty is for a solo builder using an AI coding tool. Skip means not worth building yourself.
| Feature | Difficulty | Why |
|---|---|---|
| PDF upload and preview | Easy | pdf.js in the browser renders pages; store originals in private storage. |
| Drag-and-drop signature fields | Medium | Field coordinates must map correctly across page sizes and zoom levels. |
| Signature capture | Easy | A canvas for drawing plus a typed-name option. |
| Signing links by email | Medium | One random, expiring token per signer; deliverability matters because the link is the identity check. |
| Flattened final PDF | Medium | pdf-lib can stamp signatures into the file server side. |
| Audit trail and certificate | Hard | Log every event with timestamps, IPs and document hashes; append a completion certificate. |
| Tamper-evident digital seal | Hard | Requires a signing certificate and PAdES-style signatures, not just an image on a page. |
| Signing order and reminders | Medium | A small state machine plus scheduled reminder emails. |
| Qualified signatures and ID verification | Skip | eIDAS qualified signatures need a certified trust service provider. |
Your own version vs DocuSign, at personal or small-team scale.
Personal: $11/mo billed annually
$11/month billed annually for one user and 5 envelopes a month; Standard is $30 per user per month billed annually.

| Running cost | Per month | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting (Vercel or Render) | $0–$20 | PDF stamping runs in a server function. |
| Database and private storage (Supabase) | $0–$25 | Signed contracts need durable, backed-up storage. |
| Transactional email (Resend or Postmark) | $0–$15 | Signing links and completion emails must reach the inbox. |
| Domain | $1–$2 | About $12 to $20 a year. |
| Total | $1–$62/mo | Saves up to $120 a year vs DocuSign Personal; at the top of the range it costs $612 a year more. |
Good for the field placement editor and signing UI components.
Useful when wiring pdf-lib, hashing and the event log by hand.
Strong at the server-side PDF stamping, token logic and audit log tests.
Paste it into your tool, then ask for a plan before any code. Edit the specifics to match what you need.
Build a simple e-signature tool for my own freelance agreements (internal use, low-stakes documents only). Stack: Next.js, Supabase (Postgres, auth, private storage), pdf-lib, Resend. Data model: documents (id, owner_id, title, original_path, final_path, sha256_original, sha256_final, status), signers (id, document_id, email, name, token_hash, order, signed_at, ip, user_agent), fields (id, document_id, signer_id, page, x, y, width, height, type), events (id, document_id, signer_id, type, ip, user_agent, created_at). Features: - Upload a PDF, place signature, name and date fields per signer - Email each signer a unique link with a random token (store only its hash), expiring after 14 days - Signer must tick an explicit consent box (agree to sign electronically) before signing; log it - Draw or type signature, then stamp it into the PDF server side with pdf-lib - Append an audit page listing every event, and store SHA-256 hashes of original and final files - Email the final PDF to all parties Security: private storage with signed URLs only, Row Level Security, no sequential IDs in URLs, event log is append-only, rate limit token lookups. Add a visible note that this is not a qualified or certified e-signature service.
AI tools often get these wrong by default. Check each one before anyone else uses the app.
They went far past the prototype: support, payments, reliability and years of iteration. Their profiles show what that took.

You learn how PDFs work internally, what makes an electronic signature legally meaningful, and how to design a tamper-evident audit log.
Hard. Drawing a signature on a PDF is easy to vibe code; producing a signature you could defend in a dispute is the hard part, and it is most of what DocuSign sells.
A working personal or internal MVP takes about 8 h–3 days with a tool like v0. A polished version you would rely on every day takes about 10–25 days, mostly spent on a tamper-evident final pdf with a cryptographic seal and certificate of completion.
Expect $1–$62/mo at personal or small-team scale (hosting (vercel or render), database and private storage (supabase), transactional email (resend or postmark), domain). DocuSign Personal costs $11/mo (checked 2026-11-03), so the most you would save is $120 a year, before counting your time.
In many countries a simple electronic signature can be valid, but enforceability depends on proving intent, consent and integrity of the document. The audit trail and tamper evidence matter more than the signature image. Ask a lawyer for anything high-stakes.
For internal and low-risk documents, yes, using a PDF library, signing links and an event log. For client contracts, a maintained service is safer and indie options like SignWell cost a few dollars a month.
Broadly, the signer must intend to sign, consent to electronic records, and the record must be retained accurately. eIDAS also defines advanced and qualified signatures that need identity checks and certified providers.
Building your own tool that solves the same problem is common and generally fine. Copying DocuSign's code, design assets, brand name or content is not. Use your own name and design, respect their terms of service, and get proper advice if you plan to sell it. This page is not legal advice.
