Hard: Only a slice Only a slice. A purpose-built internal app for your data is easy; a general spreadsheet-database like Airtable is hard.
Most teams use Airtable to manage one or two specific things: content calendars, leads, inventory. A vibe coding tool can build exactly that app, with the right forms and views, on a real Postgres database, which often beats a general tool. What is hard is Airtable itself: a fast grid that edits any schema, field types with formulas and lookups, views, permissions, automations and an API. At $20 per seat a month, a custom internal tool can pay off quickly for a team.
Airtable is a spreadsheet-like database with views, forms, automations and an app-building interface. This page is about building your own version for personal or internal use, or to learn how this kind of product works, not about copying Airtable to compete with it. How we grade.
Difficulty is for a solo builder using an AI coding tool. Skip means not worth building yourself.
| Feature | Difficulty | Why |
|---|---|---|
| CRUD app for your dataset | Easy | Define the schema up front; tools generate forms and tables. |
| Table view with sort and filter | Easy | Data grid libraries handle this. |
| Kanban and calendar views | Medium | Libraries exist; wiring them to your schema takes care. |
| Forms | Easy | Server-validated inserts. |
| User-defined fields and schemas | Hard | Generic schemas mean a metadata layer and a query builder. |
| Formulas and lookups | Hard | You would be writing an expression engine. |
| Automations | Medium | Simple cron and webhook triggers for your own workflows. |
| Roles and permissions | Medium | Row level security policies per role. |
| Spreadsheet-speed grid for 100K rows | Skip | Virtualized grids and query performance are specialist work. |
Your own version vs Airtable, at personal or small-team scale.
Team: $20/mo/seat billed annually
Free plan with record and automation limits; Team is $20 per editor seat a month billed annually and Business $45. Read-only collaborators are not charged.

| Running cost | Per month | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting | $0–$20 | Free or hobby tier. |
| Postgres database | $0–$25 | Supabase or Neon free/pro tier. |
| Backups and file storage | $0–$10 | Point-in-time backups are usually a paid add-on. |
| Total | $0–$55/mo | Saves up to $240 a year vs Airtable Team per seat; at the top of the range it costs $420 a year more. |

Good for a Supabase-backed internal tool with several views.
For migrating an Airtable base export into Postgres with a clean schema.
Paste it into your tool, then ask for a plan before any code. Edit the specifics to match what you need.
Build an internal web app to replace our Airtable base for [describe the use case, e.g. content calendar]. Schema (from our base): [list tables and fields with types, e.g. posts: title text, status single select (idea, draft, scheduled, published), owner user, publish_date date, channel multi-select, notes long text]. Features: - Login for team members with roles: admin, editor, viewer. - Grid view with sort, filter, inline edit and saved views. - Kanban view grouped by status and calendar view by publish_date. - A public form that creates records in [table] with server-side validation. - CSV import (to migrate our Airtable export) and CSV export. - Audit log of who changed what. Security: - Postgres with row level security; viewers cannot write, editors cannot change roles. - Public form writes only allowed fields through a server endpoint with rate limiting and a CAPTCHA. - No service keys in the browser; nightly backups enabled.
AI tools often get these wrong by default. Check each one before anyone else uses the app.
They went far past the prototype: support, payments, reliability and years of iteration. Their profiles show what that took.
Gani Georgiev built PocketBase
Open-source backend with database, auth and admin UI in one file.
Sergey Kornilov built PHPRunner
Low-code generator for web apps and admin panels on existing databases.

Turning a spreadsheet into a real schema teaches data modeling, roles and backups, the core of most internal tools.
Hard. Only a slice. A purpose-built internal app for your data is easy; a general spreadsheet-database like Airtable is hard.
A working personal or internal MVP takes about 4–12 h with a tool like Base44. A polished version you would rely on every day takes about 4–10 days, mostly spent on a spreadsheet grid that handles arbitrary user-defined schemas fast.
Expect $0–$55/mo at personal or small-team scale (hosting, postgres database, backups and file storage). Airtable Team costs $20/mo/seat (checked 2026-11-03), so the most you would save is $240 a year, before counting your time.
For a specific use case, yes. A vibe-coded app on Postgres with the views and forms your team actually uses can replace an Airtable base, often with better permissions. Replacing Airtable as a general tool is much harder.
NocoDB, Baserow and Teable are open-source Airtable-like tools you can self-host. PocketBase, by indie maker Gani Georgiev, is a lighter backend if you want to build the app yourself.
Airtable Team is $20 per editor seat a month billed annually and Business is $45, checked on 2026-11-03. Read-only collaborators and form submitters are not charged.
Building your own tool that solves the same problem is common and generally fine. Copying Airtable's code, design assets, brand name or content is not. Use your own name and design, respect their terms of service, and get proper advice if you plan to sell it. This page is not legal advice.
