Medium: Yes, with care A tracked link for your pitch deck is a very doable vibe coding project; making it both trustworthy and hard to bypass is where the effort goes.
Upload a PDF, render it page by page in the browser, give each recipient a link and log time per page. That core works in a weekend. The medium parts are honest analytics (bots and link previews open links too), access controls like email gating and expiry, and not leaking the original file. Data rooms with folders and NDAs add more work.
DocSend is secure document sharing with page-level analytics, often used for pitch decks and sales collateral. This page is about building your own version for personal or internal use, or to learn how this kind of product works, not about copying DocSend to compete with it. How we grade.
Difficulty is for a solo builder using an AI coding tool. Skip means not worth building yourself.
| Feature | Difficulty | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Upload and share link | Easy | Private storage plus a random token per link. |
| In-browser viewer | Easy | pdf.js renders pages; pre-render to images for speed. |
| Email gate | Easy | Ask for email before showing pages. |
| Verified email (magic code) | Medium | Send a one-time code so viewers cannot type any address. |
| Per-page time analytics | Medium | Send heartbeat events per visible page; filter known bots. |
| Dynamic watermark | Medium | Overlay viewer email on rendered images server side. |
| Download control | Medium | Serve page images, not the PDF; screenshots remain possible. |
| Data rooms with NDA | Hard | Folder permissions, NDA acceptance and audit history. |
Your own version vs DocSend, at personal or small-team scale.
Personal: $10/mo/seat billed annually
About $10 per user per month billed annually (about $15 monthly); Standard about $45 per user per month billed annually. No free plan.

| Running cost | Per month | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting (Vercel or Netlify) | $0–$20 | Viewer pages and the event endpoint. |
| Database and storage (Supabase) | $0–$25 | Event rows grow quickly if you log heartbeats. |
| Email for verification codes (Resend) | $0–$20 | Free tier covers light use. |
| Total | $0–$65/mo | Saves up to $120 a year vs DocSend Personal per seat; at the top of the range it costs $660 a year more. |
Quick to get an upload, viewer and dashboard running end to end.
Good analytics dashboard UI on top of Supabase.
Helpful for the page rendering pipeline, watermarking and event ingestion.
Paste it into your tool, then ask for a plan before any code. Edit the specifics to match what you need.
Build a document sharing tool for my own pitch deck and sales PDFs (personal use). Stack: Next.js, Supabase (Postgres, auth, private storage), pdf.js, Resend. Data model: documents (id, owner_id, title, file_path, page_count), links (id, document_id, token_hash, name, require_email, verify_email, allow_download, expires_at, disabled), views (id, link_id, email, ip_hash, user_agent, started_at), page_events (id, view_id, page, seconds). Features: - Upload a PDF; pre-render each page to an image server side - Create multiple links per document with their own settings - Viewer page: optional email gate, optional one-time code verification - Track seconds per page with heartbeats; ignore known bot and link-preview user agents - Dashboard per document: viewers, total time, time per page - Optional watermark of the viewer's email on each page image Security: the original PDF stays in private storage and is only served if allow_download is true, via a signed URL valid for 5 minutes. Store hashed tokens, Row Level Security on all tables, rate limit the code verification endpoint, and hash IPs before storing them.
AI tools often get these wrong by default. Check each one before anyone else uses the app.
They went far past the prototype: support, payments, reliability and years of iteration. Their profiles show what that took.

Medium. A tracked link for your pitch deck is a very doable vibe coding project; making it both trustworthy and hard to bypass is where the effort goes.
A working personal or internal MVP takes about 6–14 h with a tool like Bolt.new. A polished version you would rely on every day takes about 5–10 days, mostly spent on accurate page-time analytics that filter bots and link-preview crawlers.
Expect $0–$65/mo at personal or small-team scale (hosting (vercel or netlify), database and storage (supabase), email for verification codes (resend)). DocSend Personal costs $10/mo/seat (not independently verified), so the most you would save is $120 a year, before counting your time.
Yes. A viewer page that logs page views and time per page is a small project. Expect some noise from email scanners and link previews that open links automatically.
It can make downloading inconvenient by serving page images, but anyone can still screenshot. Watermarking with the viewer's email is the practical deterrent.
Several indie and open-source tools cover document tracking, and the alternatives list on this page shows indie-made options.
Building your own tool that solves the same problem is common and generally fine. Copying DocSend's code, design assets, brand name or content is not. Use your own name and design, respect their terms of service, and get proper advice if you plan to sell it. This page is not legal advice.
