Medium: Yes, with care Yes for one small business's booking site, but deposits, no-show rules and SMS reminders turn it into a real project.
A booking site for a salon or studio with services, staff and opening hours is very buildable. What makes Acuity worth paying for is everything around the booking: card deposits, cancellation policies, SMS reminders that cut no-shows, packages and gift certificates, and intake forms that may contain health data. If you build it, keep scope to one location and take payments through Stripe Checkout rather than storing anything sensitive.
Acuity Scheduling is appointment booking for service businesses such as salons, studios and clinics, with intake forms, payments and reminders. This page is about building your own version for personal or internal use, or to learn how this kind of product works, not about copying Acuity Scheduling to compete with it. How we grade.
Difficulty is for a solo builder using an AI coding tool. Skip means not worth building yourself.
| Feature | Difficulty | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Service catalogue | Easy | Name, duration, price, buffer; a single table. |
| Staff schedules | Easy | Weekly hours per staff member plus time-off entries. |
| Booking flow | Easy | Service, then staff, then slot, then contact details. |
| Admin calendar view | Medium | A week grid with drag to reschedule is fiddly but well supported by calendar UI libraries. |
| Email confirmations and reminders | Medium | Scheduled job plus a transactional email API. |
| SMS reminders | Medium | Twilio or similar; register your sender and budget per message. |
| Deposits and cancellation fees | Hard | Stripe Checkout or SetupIntents, webhook-confirmed, with a clear refund policy. |
| Intake forms | Medium | Keep fields minimal; avoid collecting health data you do not need. |
| Packages, memberships and gift cards | Skip | Balance tracking and liability accounting; use an existing tool if you need them. |
Your own version vs Acuity Scheduling, at personal or small-team scale.

Build an appointment booking web app for one small service business (for example a hair salon) that I own and run. Features: - Admin (owner) and staff logins. Owner manages services (name, duration, price, buffer), staff, weekly hours and time off. - Public booking flow: choose service, optional staff member, available slot, then name, email and phone. Show times in the business's time zone. - Confirmation email and a reminder email 24 hours before; optional SMS reminder via an SMS API. - Admin week view of appointments with cancel and reschedule. - Optional deposit via Stripe Checkout; the booking is confirmed only after a verified Stripe webhook. Data model: services, staff, staff_hours, time_off, customers, appointments (status: pending_payment, confirmed, cancelled, no_show). Security requirements: - Row level security or server-side checks so staff only see their business's data and customers never see other customers. - Signed, expiring tokens for customer cancel links. - Verify Stripe webhook signatures; never trust the client for payment status. - Rate limit and add bot protection on the public booking form. - Do not collect health or other sensitive data in intake fields.
AI tools often get these wrong by default. Check each one before anyone else uses the app.
They went far past the prototype: support, payments, reliability and years of iteration. Their profiles show what that took.

Booking systems teach scheduling logic, payment webhooks and background jobs, the three things most service-business software needs.
Medium. Yes for one small business's booking site, but deposits, no-show rules and SMS reminders turn it into a real project.
A working personal or internal MVP takes about 8 h–3 days with a tool like Lovable. A polished version you would rely on every day takes about 5–10 days, mostly spent on deposits, refunds and no-show fees with stripe.
Expect $5–$95/mo at personal or small-team scale (hosting, database and auth, email reminders, sms reminders, stripe). Acuity Scheduling Starter costs $16/mo (checked 2026-11-03), so the most you would save is $132 a year, before counting your time.
Yes. A single-location booking site with services, staff hours and email reminders is a realistic weekend-to-week project. Deposits, SMS reminders and packages add the most work.
On the official pricing page, Starter is $16 a month billed annually or $20 monthly, Standard $27 and Premium $55 on annual billing, checked on 2026-11-03.
It can be if you use Stripe Checkout so card data never touches your server and you confirm payments only from a signature-verified webhook. Never mark a booking as paid based on the browser redirect.
Building your own tool that solves the same problem is common and generally fine. Copying Acuity Scheduling's code, design assets, brand name or content is not. Use your own name and design, respect their terms of service, and get proper advice if you plan to sell it. This page is not legal advice.
