Founder of Laracasts, the bootstrapped video school for Laravel and PHP

About Jeffrey Way

Jeffrey Way is a web developer and teacher based in Winter Park, Florida, best known as the founder of Laracasts, the long-running screencast platform for Laravel, PHP and modern JavaScript. Before Laracasts he built a following as a tutorial author and editor at Envato's Nettuts+ (later Tuts+), and wrote the book Laravel Testing Decoded.

He launched Laracasts in 2013 to scratch his own itch: rather than a general programming school, he wanted one place where a single type of developer, the Laravel and PHP full-stack developer, could find every answer, inspired by Ruby's RailsCasts. Despite early pushback that he should cover PHP broadly, he bootstrapped it into the default learning resource for the Laravel ecosystem, with thousands of videos, learning paths, interactive exams and a large community forum, sold as a subscription for individuals and teams. Way still records many courses himself in a relaxed, step-by-step style. He also created Laravel Mix, the webpack wrapper that became the Laravel default build tool for several years.

AI coding tools have hit the business hard. In January 2026 he told viewers Laracasts had to cut about 40% of its staff because AI had changed how developers learn, even as the site was publishing more content than ever; he has since leaned in with courses such as Leveraging AI for Laravel Development and a native Laracasts iOS app. On the side he builds Rosette, a sheet music, practice and performance library for classical guitarists with iPhone and iPad apps.
