Michael Lynch

Bootstrapper who built and sold TinyPilot, now writing Refactoring English

About Michael Lynch

Michael Lynch is a software developer and blogger who spent his early career as an engineer at Microsoft and Google and as a security engineer at NCC Group. He quit Google in 2018 to build his own businesses and has written transparent monthly and annual retrospectives at mtlynch.io ever since, sharing revenue, mistakes and lessons.

His early projects included Zestful, a paid API for parsing recipe ingredients, the keto food site Is It Keto, and What Got Done, a weekly task journal he built to learn Vue.js and later open-sourced. His breakthrough was TinyPilot, which began in 2020 as a blog post on building a KVM-over-IP device from a Raspberry Pi. He turned it into a hardware company that grew to about $1M in annual revenue in four years and sold it in 2024 for $598K.

Since the sale he has focused on Refactoring English: Effective Writing for Software Developers, a book sold through paid early access and a Kickstarter campaign, alongside editing work for other technical bloggers. He also maintains open-source self-hostable apps such as PicoShare and ScreenJournal, built with Go and SQLite. He lives in Western Massachusetts.

Lynch missed writing code, was worn out from juggling every part of a hardware business with several teams and vendors, and wanted to start a family. He said TinyPilot took a minority of his time but most of his stress.
