Hard: Only a slice Building your own site is easy; building a Webflow-like visual builder and CMS is hard and rarely worth it.
Most people searching this really want their marketing site without a Webflow bill, and that part is easy: a vibe-coded Next.js or Astro site with a Markdown or headless CMS covers it. Recreating Webflow itself means a visual editor that outputs clean responsive CSS, a CMS with collections, hosting, interactions and collaboration. That is years of product work. Build the site, not the builder.
Webflow is a visual website builder and CMS with hosting, used by designers and marketing teams. This page is about building your own version for personal or internal use, or to learn how this kind of product works, not about copying Webflow to compete with it. How we grade.
Difficulty is for a solo builder using an AI coding tool. Skip means not worth building yourself.
| Feature | Difficulty | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Marketing site as code | Easy | Any tool builds a multi-page site quickly. |
| Blog from Markdown | Easy | Content collections in Astro or MDX in Next.js. |
| Non-developer editing | Medium | Plug in a headless CMS or a Git-based CMS instead of building one. |
| Forms | Easy | Serverless function plus email notification. |
| Animations | Medium | Framer Motion or CSS; fine when coded by hand. |
| Visual page builder | Hard | The core of Webflow; an editor that produces good CSS is a large project. |
| Multi-site hosting | Hard | Tenant routing, domain verification, SSL and abuse handling. |
| Localization | Medium | Per-locale routes and content files. |
Your own version vs Webflow, at personal or small-team scale.
Basic site plan: $15/mo billed annually
Basic is $15 a month billed yearly ($25 monthly) with no CMS; the CMS tier (Premium since May 2026) is about $25 a month billed yearly. Workspace seats are extra.

| Running cost | Per month | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Static hosting | $0–$20 | Free tiers handle most marketing sites. |
| Headless CMS | $0–$15 | Free tiers of most headless or Git-based CMSs cover a small team. |
| Domain | $1–$2 | About $12-20 a year. |
| Forms and email | $0–$10 | Serverless function plus a transactional email free tier. |
| Total | $1–$47/mo | Saves up to $168 a year vs Webflow Basic site plan; at the top of the range it costs $384 a year more. |
Best for designed marketing sections you then assemble into pages.
For maintaining a real multi-page codebase and CMS integration.
Good at migrating an exported Webflow site into a clean framework project.
Paste it into your tool, then ask for a plan before any code. Edit the specifics to match what you need.
Rebuild my company marketing site as a maintainable code project (not a site builder). Pages: home, pricing, about, blog index, blog post, contact, legal pages. Requirements: - Use a component library of sections (hero, logo strip, feature grid, testimonial, pricing table, FAQ, CTA) driven by content files so pages can be composed without new code. - Blog posts in Markdown/MDX with frontmatter (title, description, date, author, image); generate RSS and sitemap. - Optional: connect a headless CMS for non-developer editing. - Responsive, accessible, Lighthouse 95+, static output with image optimization. - Contact form posts to a serverless function that validates input and emails me. - Preserve existing URLs and add 301 redirects for any that change. Security: - Server-side validation, honeypot and rate limiting on the form. - CMS and email API tokens only in server environment variables. - Sanitize any HTML coming from the CMS before rendering. - Set security headers (CSP, X-Frame-Options, Referrer-Policy) in host config.
AI tools often get these wrong by default. Check each one before anyone else uses the app.
They went far past the prototype: support, payments, reliability and years of iteration. Their profiles show what that took.

Rebuilding a marketing site as code teaches component design, content modeling and SEO-safe migrations.
Hard. Building your own site is easy; building a Webflow-like visual builder and CMS is hard and rarely worth it.
A working personal or internal MVP takes about 6 h–3 days with a tool like v0. A polished version you would rely on every day takes about 4–10 days, mostly spent on a visual drag-and-drop editor that outputs clean, responsive css.
Expect $1–$47/mo at personal or small-team scale (static hosting, headless cms, domain, forms and email). Webflow Basic site plan costs $15/mo (not independently verified), so the most you would save is $168 a year, before counting your time.
Yes for your own marketing site: a vibe-coded Astro or Next.js site with Markdown or a headless CMS replaces most of what small teams use Webflow for. You give up the visual editor for non-developers.
Third-party trackers report the Basic site plan at $15 a month billed yearly after a May 2026 change, with the CMS-capable plan around $25 a month yearly. Webflow's pricing page did not load for us, so confirm there.
ChaiBuilder, made by indie maker Suraj Air, has an open-source core for Next.js. Builder.io and GrapesJS are other options.
Building your own tool that solves the same problem is common and generally fine. Copying Webflow's code, design assets, brand name or content is not. Use your own name and design, respect their terms of service, and get proper advice if you plan to sell it. This page is not legal advice.
