Hard: Only a slice A small storefront for a handful of products is easy to vibe code with Stripe Checkout; replacing Shopify's checkout, shipping, tax and app ecosystem is not.
If you sell a few physical products, a product catalog plus Stripe Checkout with shipping address collection gets you selling. The hard parts of commerce live behind the cart: inventory that never oversells, shipping rates and labels, sales tax and VAT, fraud, returns and order emails. Shopify also gives you a tuned checkout that buyers trust, which affects conversion more than most code you could write.
Shopify is hosted e-commerce platform for online stores, with checkout, payments, inventory, shipping and an app ecosystem. This page is about building your own version for personal or internal use, or to learn how this kind of product works, not about copying Shopify to compete with it. How we grade.
Difficulty is for a solo builder using an AI coding tool. Skip means not worth building yourself.
| Feature | Difficulty | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Catalog and product pages | Easy | Static generation keeps pages fast and cheap. |
| Cart | Easy | Local storage cart; validate prices again on the server. |
| Checkout | Easy | Stripe Checkout handles cards, wallets and address collection. |
| Variants (size, color) | Medium | Model variants as separate SKUs with their own stock. |
| Inventory | Medium | Decrement stock in a transaction from the payment webhook. |
| Shipping rates and labels | Hard | Carrier APIs or a service like Shippo or EasyPost. |
| Sales tax and VAT | Hard | Stripe Tax calculates; registration and filing stay with you. |
| Returns and refunds | Medium | Refunds via Stripe; return logistics is manual. |
| App ecosystem and themes | Skip | Thousands of apps are the moat; not a coding problem. |
Your own version vs Shopify, at personal or small-team scale.
Basic: $29/mo billed annually
About $29 a month billed yearly ($39 monthly) in the US; online card rate about 2.9% + $0.30 and an extra fee if you use a third-party payment provider. US price confirmed via several 2026 reviews; the official page served euro prices when checked.

Strong at storefront and product page design.
Quick to wire catalog, cart and admin to Supabase.
Best for the order webhook, inventory transactions and tax setup.
Paste it into your tool, then ask for a plan before any code. Edit the specifics to match what you need.
Build a small online shop for my own handmade products (one seller, under 50 products). Stack: Next.js, Supabase (Postgres, auth, storage), Stripe Checkout with Stripe Tax, Resend. Data model: products (id, slug, title, description, images, active), variants (id, product_id, name, sku, price_cents, stock), orders (id, stripe_session_id, email, shipping_address jsonb, status, total_cents, created_at), order_items (id, order_id, variant_id, qty, unit_price_cents). Features: - Product listing and product pages with variants - Cart in local storage - Server action creates a Stripe Checkout Session using prices from the database and collects shipping address - Webhook (signature verified, idempotent) creates the order and decrements stock in a single transaction; if stock is insufficient, flag the order for refund - Order confirmation email and a shipped email with tracking number entered by me - Admin (my account only) for products, stock and orders Security: never trust prices or totals from the browser, Row Level Security on all tables, admin checks server side, private storage for anything not public, rate limit checkout creation.
AI tools often get these wrong by default. Check each one before anyone else uses the app.
They went far past the prototype: support, payments, reliability and years of iteration. Their profiles show what that took.

Hard. A small storefront for a handful of products is easy to vibe code with Stripe Checkout; replacing Shopify's checkout, shipping, tax and app ecosystem is not.
A working personal or internal MVP takes about 8 h–3 days with a tool like v0. A polished version you would rely on every day takes about 10–25 days, mostly spent on inventory consistency under concurrent orders.
Expect $1–$67/mo at personal or small-team scale (hosting (vercel or netlify), database (supabase), email (resend), payment and tax fees (stripe, stripe tax), domain). Shopify Basic costs $29/mo (not independently verified), so the most you would save is $336 a year, before counting your time.
Yes. For a few products, a catalog plus Stripe Checkout is enough to start. You take on inventory, shipping, tax and customer service tooling that Shopify bundles.
Hosting can be nearly free, so you save the subscription, but payment fees are similar. The real cost is your time on the parts Shopify already solved, like shipping and tax.
Everything after payment: inventory accuracy, shipping, tax, returns and fraud. The storefront is the easy part.
Building your own tool that solves the same problem is common and generally fine. Copying Shopify's code, design assets, brand name or content is not. Use your own name and design, respect their terms of service, and get proper advice if you plan to sell it. This page is not legal advice.
