Josh Pigford

Serial dabbler who built and sold Baremetrics for $4M, now shipping AI products

About Josh Pigford

Josh Pigford is a serial maker best known as the founder of Baremetrics, the Stripe analytics and SaaS metrics tool he built and launched in about eight days in October 2013. Before that he ran survey tools PopSurvey and Temper, and the pain he felt tracking their metrics inspired Baremetrics. He later sold those earlier products to focus on it.

Baremetrics became one of the poster children of the 'open startup' movement, publishing its revenue and metrics publicly for anyone to see. After an earlier deal fell apart late in due diligence, Pigford sold Baremetrics to private equity firm Xenon Partners in 2020 for $4M in cash, writing openly about every step of both processes.

He then co-founded Maybe, a personal finance app; when the venture-funded version wound down he open-sourced the codebase, which became a popular self-hosted project before he stepped back from it in 2025. Today he describes himself as a 'dabbler' and works on a wide set of small, AI-heavy products — from Knockoff (brand protection for Shopify stores) and Granite (an AI document vault) to KeptWell (a medical binder for families) — plus Initial Commit, a community for AI-native builders.

$4M cash

Josh Pigford said he is more of a maker than a manager, the CEO role had become stressful especially after COVID, and he wanted to start new things and reach financial independence for his family.

How Josh builds

  • Be open about your numbers — transparency builds trust and an audience.
  • The early, anything-goes phase of building is where the creative energy lives.
  • Ship a first version fast; Baremetrics' MVP took about a week.
  • If a product doesn't work as a company, open-sourcing it can give it a second life.
