HelpSpot

Help desk and customer service software available as SaaS or self-hosted.
Bootstrapper behind HelpSpot since 2005, LaraJobs and the Mostly Technical podcast
Ian Landsman is a self-taught developer and long-time bootstrapper who founded UserScape and shipped HelpSpot, a customer service and help desk application, on October 24, 2005. To fund the company he and his wife sold their car, and Ian coded full-time for about six months, sharing progress publicly on his blog and the Joel on Software forums before launch. HelpSpot has been profitable every month since launch and has never taken outside funding.
HelpSpot started as on-premise PHP software written without a framework and later added a SaaS version; it has since been rebuilt on Laravel, with the front end moving to Livewire. Over two decades it counted early web companies such as Twitter and Basecamp among its customers, has shipped roughly 450 releases, and has run as a fully remote team with about a dozen employees over its lifetime.
Ian has been a central figure in the Laravel ecosystem. Laravel creator Taylor Otwell worked at UserScape for several years, and Ian ran the first two Laracon conferences plus seven editions of Laracon Online. In 2014 he launched LaraJobs, the official Laravel job board. He co-hosted Bootstrapped, a startup podcast that ran for more than 100 episodes between 2013 and 2018, and now co-hosts the weekly Mostly Technical podcast with Aaron Francis.
His newest product is Outro, a production hub for podcasters that covers rundowns, guest and sponsor management and AI-assisted show notes. Ian is based in Poughkeepsie, New York.

Ian Landsman said Snappy was a good app but not a good business for UserScape. Its low price point needed huge customer volume, and the small team's time was better spent on its main product, HelpSpot.

Yes. HelpSpot was funded by selling a car and Ian's own work, took no VC money, and Ian says it has been profitable every month for 20 years.
