Gergely Orosz

Ex-Uber engineering manager who writes The Pragmatic Engineer newsletter

About Gergely Orosz

Gergely Orosz is a software engineer turned independent writer, based in Amsterdam, who publishes The Pragmatic Engineer, the leading software engineering newsletter on Substack. Before going independent, Orosz built trading software at J.P. Morgan, worked on Skype for Xbox One and Skype for Web at Skype and Microsoft, spent time at Skyscanner, and then four years at Uber in Amsterdam leading mobile, web and backend teams, including work on the payments system.

Orosz had blogged at The Pragmatic Engineer since 2015 and self-published books for engineers, left Uber in 2020 and went full time on the newsletter in 2021. It grew remarkably fast, reaching around 200,000 subscribers within a year, by offering deeply reported pieces on how tech companies build software, engineering culture, compensation and the job market, often based on insider sources.

The newsletter is subscription-funded and Orosz has a stated policy of not accepting sponsored content in the blog, guest posts or gifted products. The work has expanded into The Pragmatic Engineer Podcast, launched in 2024, a YouTube channel, and four books, most notably The Software Engineer's Guidebook, a bestselling guide to senior, staff and principal engineering roles that took about four years to write. Orosz also angel invests and advises developer-tool startups.
