What is ACV? Annual contract value explained

ACV is the average yearly value of a customer contract, excluding one-time fees.

Definition · also called annual contract value, average contract value

ACV (annual contract value) is the average recurring revenue a customer contract is worth per year. A three-year contract worth $36,000 has an ACV of $12,000. A $29/month self-serve customer has an ACV of $348.

For a self-serve SaaS, ACV is simply ARPU × 12. In sales-led companies it is calculated per contract, excluding one-time setup or implementation fees.

ACV formula

ACV = total recurring contract value ÷ contract length in years

  • Exclude one-time fees (setup, onboarding, training).
  • Average ACV across customers = ARR ÷ number of customers.
  • TCV (total contract value) is the whole contract including one-time fees; ARR is the sum of all customers' annual recurring value.

Worked example

A customer signs a 2-year contract for $24,000 plus a $2,000 onboarding fee.

  • ACV = $24,000 ÷ 2 = $12,000
  • TCV = $26,000
  • Contribution to ARR = $12,000

Why ACV decides how you sell

ACV caps what you can afford to spend winning a customer. Rough, widely used bands:

ACVTypical sales model
Under ~$1,000Self-serve only: no sales calls, product and content do the selling
~$1,000–$10,000Self-serve plus light sales help: demos, onboarding calls
~$10,000–$100,000Inside sales team, trials, procurement
$100,000+Field sales, long contracts, security reviews

These bands are rules of thumb rather than sourced benchmarks. The logic is the LTV:CAC math: a $300 ACV customer cannot pay for an hour-long sales process. Most indie products live in the first band.

ACV in practice: how indie makers use it

Average ACV for indie businesses in the directory, calculated by us from their reported revenue and customer counts:

Lunch Money at $80K ARR with 1,000 paying users works out to an average ACV of about $80: a pure self-serve consumer product. (source: indiehackers.com)

  • Joel Gascoigne

Buffer's $22.4M ARR across 67,572 paying customers (May 2025) is an average ACV of about $330. (source: buffer.com)

  • Nick Velkovski

HeyReach reported more than $19M ARR with 7,500+ customers in October 2026, an average ACV of roughly $2,500, high enough for a B2B team serving agencies. (source: arr.club)

Designjoy's $5,000/month subscription is an ACV of up to $60,000 for a client who stays a year, sold with no sales calls by a single person. (source: highspirit.substack.com)

Frequently asked questions

What does ACV stand for?

In SaaS, ACV stands for annual contract value: the average yearly recurring value of a customer contract, excluding one-time fees. Some people expand it as average contract value.

What is the difference between ACV and ARR?

ACV is per customer or per contract; ARR is the total annual recurring revenue across all customers. Average ACV = ARR ÷ number of customers.

How do you calculate ACV?

Divide the recurring value of the contract by its length in years. A $36,000 three-year contract has an ACV of $12,000. For self-serve SaaS, ACV is ARPU × 12.

What is a good ACV?

There is no single good number; ACV must match your acquisition cost. Self-serve products can thrive at under $500 ACV, while products needing sales calls generally need ACVs in the thousands.
