About Jen Yip

Jen Yip is a software engineer and founder best known for Lunch Money, a personal finance and budgeting web app that she built and ran as a company of one. Lunch Money is a favourite indie hacker story: a customer-funded product aimed at people with multi-currency, multi-account finances, grown largely through word of mouth and Hacker News.

Yip studied computer engineering at the University of Waterloo and spent almost four years as a software engineer at Twitter. She then co-founded a pet-health startup that went through the first YC Fellowship and 500 Startups. After she and her husband moved to Toronto and outgrew their budgeting spreadsheet, she decided to turn it into an app.

She built the first version of Lunch Money while living in Fukuoka, Japan, in early 2019, using React, Node.js and PostgreSQL. A private beta followed that July, and an August 2019 Show HN post brought nearly 1,000 sign-ups in a few hours. She handled engineering, design and customer support herself, spending winters abroad as a self-described digital snowmad.

Lunch Money reached 1,000 paying users in March 2021, when Yip reported $80,000 ARR. By March 2024 Indie Hackers reported it had hit $34,000 MRR with growth driven almost entirely by word of mouth. The company has been customer-funded from the start; it now operates as Lunchbag Labs with a small team, and in 2025 it turned a community-built companion app into its official iOS and Android app.

Yip is known for choosing passion over hypergrowth, with a close relationship with users and in-person community meetups. For solo founders she is a model of building a calm, profitable product in a crowded fintech category.
