Why they sold: After a round of bug fixes cut new-customer acquisition by about 70%, Nico Jeannen didn't want to spend months on code fixes and support, so he sold quickly before burning out.

The story of Talknotes

Nico Jeannen, a former media buyer who had learned to code in 2022, built Talknotes in about a week in August 2023. It is an AI app that turns voice recordings into clean transcripts, lists and other structured notes. He had the idea after Google Docs' voice transcription fell short, and he chose it partly because it could be grown with paid ads.

After a soft launch on Twitter and listings on many startup directories, a #1 Product of the Day finish on Product Hunt took it from about $500 to $2,000 MRR. Facebook and Google ads then pushed it to about $7,500 MRR within roughly 11 months, and he deliberately made growth independent of his own Twitter account.

He listed Talknotes on Acquire.com in mid-2024. Although he thought a longer process might bring around $300K, he accepted an all-cash $200,000 deal that closed within weeks, announced in July 2024. The buyer was not named publicly. It was his second exit after MakeLogo.ai.

Lessons Nico Jeannen shared

  1. 1.Growth that doesn't depend on the founder's personal audience makes a product more attractive to buyers.
  2. 2.He chose speed and certainty over holding out for the highest possible price.
  3. 3.Playing buyers against each other can backfire.
