Why they sold: Wathan said joining Shopify gives Tailwind CSS a stable long-term home where it will keep being actively maintained, and lets the team build the framework in service of a large real-world product. Earlier in 2026 he had said AI tools had cut revenue by nearly 80% even as usage grew.

The story of Tailwind CSS

Tailwind CSS is the utility-first CSS framework Adam Wathan open-sourced in 2017. It became one of the most widely used front-end tools, and Tailwind Labs funded development by selling commercial products such as Tailwind UI (later Tailwind Plus) and ui.sh.

In January 2026 Wathan said publicly that usage was growing faster than ever but revenue was down almost 80%, which he attributed to AI tools sending fewer developers to the documentation where the paid products were found. Three of the four engineers were laid off, and he warned that the company could otherwise struggle to meet payroll within months.

On September 9, 2026, Tailwind Labs announced it was joining Shopify, an early large-scale adopter of the framework. Terms were not disclosed. Tailwind CSS and the other open-source projects stay MIT-licensed and the team keeps leading them with Shopify's backing. Tailwind Labs stopped trying to grow its commercial business: existing customers keep access to Tailwind Plus and ui.sh, but new sign-ups were closed.
