Easy: Yes, easily A private URL shortener with click counts is one of the easiest vibe coding projects, as long as you keep it closed to strangers.
Shortening a link is a database lookup and a redirect, so a working shortener on your own domain takes an afternoon. Click analytics and QR codes are straightforward too. The real risk is abuse: an open shortener on your domain will be found and used for phishing and malware links, which gets your domain blocklisted. Keep it behind your own login and it is a cheap, useful internal tool.
Bitly is link shortener with branded domains, QR codes and click analytics. This page is about building your own version for personal or internal use, or to learn how this kind of product works, not about copying Bitly to compete with it. How we grade.
Difficulty is for a solo builder using an AI coding tool. Skip means not worth building yourself.
| Feature | Difficulty | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Short code redirect | Easy | Look up the code and return a 301 or 302 redirect. |
| Custom domain | Easy | Point a short domain at the app. |
| Click analytics | Easy | Log timestamp, referrer, country and device on each redirect. |
| QR codes | Easy | Generate with an open source QR library; dynamic QR codes are just short links. |
| Edit destination after sharing | Easy | Store the destination separately from the code. |
| Bot filtering | Medium | Link previewers and crawlers hit every link; filter them out of counts. |
| Public signups | Skip | Opens the door to phishing abuse; keep it private. |
| Edge redirects at scale | Medium | Cache lookups at the edge, for example in a KV store. |
Your own version vs Bitly, at personal or small-team scale.

Build a private URL shortener for my own links (only I can create links). Stack: Next.js on Vercel or Cloudflare, Supabase Postgres, a QR code library. Data model: links (id, code unique, destination_url, title, created_at, archived), clicks (link_id, ts, referrer_host, country, device, is_bot). Features: 1. Route /[code] that looks up the link and redirects with a 302, logging the click asynchronously so the redirect stays fast. 2. Dashboard (my login only) to create links with an optional custom code, edit destinations, archive links and download a QR code as PNG or SVG. 3. Per-link analytics: clicks per day, top referrers, countries and devices, excluding known bots and link preview crawlers. 4. 404 page for unknown or archived codes. Security: only authenticated admins can create or edit links; validate destination URLs (http and https only, no javascript: or data: URLs); block my own domain as a destination to prevent redirect loops; rate-limit the redirect route; never store raw IP addresses; row level security on both tables.
AI tools often get these wrong by default. Check each one before anyone else uses the app.
They went far past the prototype: support, payments, reliability and years of iteration. Their profiles show what that took.

Easy. A private URL shortener with click counts is one of the easiest vibe coding projects, as long as you keep it closed to strangers.
A working personal or internal MVP takes about 2–4 h with a tool like Bolt.new. A polished version you would rely on every day takes about 12 h–3 days, mostly spent on abuse prevention if anyone else can create links.
Expect $1–$13/mo at personal or small-team scale (hosting, database or kv store, short domain). Bitly Core costs $10/mo (checked 2026-11-03), so the most you would save is $108 a year, before counting your time.

As of November 2026 Bitly's Core plan is $10 a month billed annually for 100 links a month, and the free plan allows 5 links a month.
Spammers use them to hide phishing and malware links, so browsers and email providers blocklist the domain. Without moderation and scanning, a public shortener becomes a liability.
Building your own tool that solves the same problem is common and generally fine. Copying Bitly's code, design assets, brand name or content is not. Use your own name and design, respect their terms of service, and get proper advice if you plan to sell it. This page is not legal advice.
