About Zoltán Szőgyényi

Zoltán Szőgyényi is a Romania-based web developer and founder best known as the co-creator of Flowbite, one of the most widely used open-source component libraries for Tailwind CSS, and co-founder of the theme studio Themesberg. Flowbite's npm package is downloaded more than two million times a month.

Szőgyényi started Themesberg in 2019 with designer Robert Tanislav in Timișoara, in western Romania, selling Bootstrap themes and UI kits under freelancer, company and enterprise licenses. The first product was Pixel UI Kit, followed by projects such as Neumorphism UI, a Windows 95 UI kit and the Volt Bootstrap 5 dashboard. In a public 2020 year-in-review he reported more than $25,000 in license sales, almost 100,000 unique visitors and no paid advertising. In late September 2020 the template company Creative Tim invested in Themesberg and became a shareholder, while the founders kept control.

In 2021 Szőgyényi turned to Tailwind CSS. Noticing that Tailwind had no base set of components, which made quick prototyping hard, he and Tanislav launched Flowbite as an MIT-licensed library of interactive components, with Szőgyényi handling development and Tanislav the design. A matching Figma design system, paid Pro blocks and admin templates provide the revenue, and community ports for React, Svelte, Vue and other frameworks grew around it. The flowbite repository has more than 9,000 GitHub stars.

He now runs his projects through Bergside, and his X bio lists newer products: TypeUI, a tool for building better interfaces with AI; Web Designer News, a Hacker News-style community for designers; and src.club, an AI community.

Szőgyényi is a good example of the open-core playbook for indie developers: give away a high-quality free library to win distribution, then sell premium design assets and templates to the teams who adopt it.
