About Matt D'Avella

Matt D'Avella is a filmmaker and YouTuber best known for minimalism and habits videos and for Master YouTube, an online course for aspiring creators. With about 4 million YouTube subscribers, D'Avella has turned a personal channel into a small creator business built on courses, a newsletter and a paid community, and now promotes a philosophy called the slow creator approach.

D'Avella picked up a camcorder in high school and, straight out of college, freelanced making videos for brands such as Red Bull and Reebok, and later made a documentary that was released on Netflix and nominated for an Emmy. Wanting to tell original stories, D'Avella started a YouTube channel in 2017 with no audience and spent about a year getting videos barely past 100 views, until My Minimalist Apartment broke through, the channel gained 50,000 subscribers in two months and YouTube featured it as a Creator on the Rise. D'Avella went full-time in 2018 and passed 1 million subscribers in 2019. The Ground Up podcast and 30-day experiment videos, such as cold showers, made the channel a reference point for the productivity and self-improvement genre.

Growth came at a cost. D'Avella has written that a business tied to view counts pushed 12-hour days, severe burnout and generalised anxiety, and that hiring a team of up to 11 editors, managers and writers made things worse rather than freeing up time. After letting the team go, D'Avella cut back to about one video a month and found engagement rose.

That experience is now the product. Master YouTube teaches newcomers how to plan a channel, make better videos and reach their first 10,000 subscribers, and has been taken by creators with hundreds of thousands of subscribers. The weekly Snail Mail newsletter reaches roughly 95,000 creators, a members' community runs on Circle, the Slow Creator Podcast features creators who chose depth over speed, and a new product, Edit Kit, is in the works. The X profile lists Sydney, Australia as home.

D'Avella matters to creator-founders as a high-profile example of selling an honest, anti-hustle method rather than growth hacks, and of a YouTuber shrinking a team to build a calmer, more sustainable business.
