Kevin Powell

Canadian CSS educator with 1,000+ YouTube videos and The Cascade course platform

About Kevin Powell

Kevin Powell is a Canadian front-end developer and self-described CSS evangelist whose mission is helping people fall in love with CSS. Powell is best known for a YouTube channel with more than 1,000 videos, almost all about CSS, which by 2026 was approaching 1 million subscribers.

Powell's route into web development was unusual: studies in film, a BA in Urban Studies, then a vocational degree in graphic design. After building table-based web pages as a teenager in the late 1990s, Powell worked as a print designer, picked up freelance UI design and then development work, and was later invited back to teach at the design school. After a couple of years teaching introductory web classes, Powell started the YouTube channel in 2016 as a way to keep learning and go deeper, never expecting it to grow as it did.

Today the teaching business runs on The Cascade, a dedicated learning platform with the flagship paid course CSS Demystified, a free HTML and CSS course for absolute beginners and free curated learning paths on topics like Flexbox, Grid and positioning. Powell also teaches CSS Fundamentals and Professional CSS on Frontend Masters, streams on Twitch, writes a weekly newsletter and hosts a podcast with guests from the CSS and front-end world.
