Definition · also called acquihire, acq-hire, talent acquisition
An acqui-hire is an acquisition in which the buyer is mainly paying for people: the founder or team join the acquiring company, and the product is often shut down, folded into the buyer's product or left to run as a side project.
Acqui-hires are common when a product has a talented team but limited revenue, or when the buyer wants a well-known creator or community leader in-house. For the founder it trades independence for a job, usually with a retention package that vests over time.
Acqui-hire vs regular acquisition
| Acqui-hire | Regular acquisition | |
|---|---|---|
| Buyer wants | The people | The product and its revenue |
| Product afterwards | Often shut down or merged | Keeps running |
| Founder afterwards | Becomes an employee | Usually leaves after a handover |
| Price based on | Team size and retention packages | Revenue or profit multiple |
What to negotiate in an acqui-hire
- Upfront vs retention. Much of the value may be salary and stock that vest only if you stay; know what you get if you leave or are let go.
- What happens to customers. Agree on shutdown notice, refunds or migration, and whether the product stays open source.
- Your IP and side projects. Employment contracts can claim things you build later.
- Your title and scope, in writing.
How IndieMakerList treats acqui-hired makers
We spotlight makers who are actively building their own products. When a maker joins the acquirer full time, we keep their profile but list them as a former maker, grayed out and never ranked.

Frequently asked questions
What is an acqui-hire?
An acquisition where the buyer mainly wants the founder or team to join as employees, rather than the product or its revenue.
What happens to the product in an acqui-hire?
It is often shut down or merged into the buyer's product, though some keep running, especially open-source projects and communities.
Is an acqui-hire a good outcome?
It can be, if the founder wants a job at the buyer and the retention package is fair. Founders who want to stay independent usually prefer selling the product outright and moving on.
