How Long Does It Take to Reach $1K, $10K and $100K MRR?
How many years indie makers take to go from starting out to $1K, $10K and $100K in monthly recurring revenue, split by start-year cohort, category and team. This adds the cohort and category angle to maker journeys, which lists every maker's path one by one.

01 / the range
$10K MRR came between 1 year (exact cases) and 5 years (upper bound) after starting.
Two numbers, because the data allows two readings. Exact: the 15 makers whose $10K year is pinned down by a dated “we crossed $10K” post, which skews toward fast, celebrated climbs (median 1 year). Upper bound: all 97 makers who reached $10K, using the first year a figure at that level is on record (median 5 years). Many crossed earlier and only posted later, so this reading runs slow.
The 40 makers who reached $100K MRR did so a median 5 years after starting, about the same as the $10K group. The businesses that get big tend to get big early rather than grinding up step by step.

02 / within N years
28% of makers who reached $10K MRR had it on record within two years; 63% within five.
Cumulative shares, among makers who eventually reached each level. 27% of $1K makers had it on record within a year of starting; for $10K the curve is slower (15% within a year) and keeps rising for a decade. If you are two years in and below $10K, you are in the majority of those who eventually got there.

03 / cohorts
Makers who started in 2020 or later reached $10K in 3 years; pre-2010 starters took 14 years.
Grouping makers by the year they started shows a steep slope, and most of it is a statistical trap called right-censoring. A maker who started in 2022 can only be in this table if they reached $10K within four years; a 2008 starter could take fifteen. Older cohorts also had fewer public milestones, so their first recorded figure often comes years after the fact.
What the cohort view does show: plenty of recent starters reached $10K fast (the AI product wave and audience-first launches are well represented), and $100K MRR is reachable within a few years for a small group.

AI Builders reached $10K MRR fastest (2.5 years); SaaS Founders took 5 years.
Median years to $10K MRR for categories with at least 6 makers who got there. SaaS founders, the biggest group, took 5 years (n = 59). AI Builders got there faster than SaaS founders, whose subscription revenue compounds more slowly. Small groups, so read the order rather than the decimals.

Solo founders reached $10K in 5 years, duos in 4 years, serial makers in 3.5 years.
Serial makers, who have shipped many products, got there faster than the median maker (3.5 years vs 5 years): each launch builds an audience for the next. Makers who build in public took 4 years (n = 66), no slower than the overall median.

man study --methodology
Methodology, sample and limits
- Source. Dated milestones for 659 makers in data/journeys.json, extracted from each maker's cited milestones, products and revenue, plus researched self-reported posts. 184 journeys contain at least one revenue figure.
- Clock. Years = first calendar year with a recorded figure at or above the level, minus the year the maker started making (not the product's launch year). 0 means the same calendar year.
- Exact vs upper bound. A year is exact when a source says the level was crossed that year, a lower figure was recorded earlier the same year, or it is the start year. Otherwise it is an upper bound. /journeys/ reports exact years only; this study uses both and labels which is which.
- Annual figures. ARR and annual revenue are divided by 12; an annual average can understate the peak month.
- Limits. Only makers who reached each level are counted, so this says how long success took for those who succeeded, not the odds of success. Recent cohorts are right-censored. Category and team groups overlap and are small.
- Freshness. Every number is recomputed from the dataset each time the site is built. Data as of ; 2026 is a partial year.
- Open data. The maker dataset is available as JSON at /api/makers.json under CC BY 4.0. Found an error? Profiles can be corrected on the submit page.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to reach $10K MRR?
Among 97 indie makers who reached $10K MRR, the first recorded figure at that level came a median 5 years after they started making (middle half: 2 years to 7 years). Where the exact year is documented (n = 15), the median is 1 year. The real answer for most makers sits between the two.
How long does it take to get to $1K MRR?
For 112 makers who reached $1K MRR, the median is 3.5 years from start to the first recorded $1K month (upper bound). In 22 cases with an exact year, the median is under 1 year: many makers who document it hit $1K in the same year they launch.
How long does it take to reach $100K MRR?
40 profiled makers have reached $100K MRR. Their median time from start is 5 years (upper bound), with half between 3 years and 7.3 years.
Is it faster to reach $10K MRR today than ten years ago?
Makers who started in 2020 or later reached $10K in a median 3 years, versus 14 years for those who started before 2010. Most of that gap is a measurement artefact: recent starters can only appear in the data if they got there fast. It is not evidence that indie hacking got easier.
What share of indie makers reach $10K MRR?
We can't measure that from survivors. Of 659 maker journeys in our dataset, 97 record $10K MRR or more. Most people who try never reach it and never get profiled.
