Tanner Linsley

Creator of TanStack: Query, Table, Router, Start and other open source libraries

About Tanner Linsley

Tanner Linsley is a front-end developer and open source maintainer best known as the creator of TanStack, a family of headless, framework-agnostic TypeScript libraries that includes TanStack Query (formerly React Query), TanStack Table (formerly React Table), TanStack Router and the full-stack framework TanStack Start. The libraries are free and MIT-licensed and together are downloaded hundreds of millions of times a month on npm.

The projects grew out of their work at Nozzle, an enterprise SEO rank-tracking company they co-founded with friends and spent roughly a decade building as its UI/UX lead. React Table came first, built because existing React table components were too rigid for Nozzle's data-heavy dashboards. React Query followed in 2019 to tame server state in React apps and reached a much wider audience. As the libraries became framework-agnostic, they were regrouped under the TanStack name, which started as a friend's joke about Tanner building their own stack.

Around 2024 they began working on TanStack full time. The project is funded through corporate partnerships and individual GitHub sponsorships, which also pay a group of core maintainers. TanStack Start reached its v1 release candidate in September 2025.

Linsley is based in Utah and is a frequent conference speaker and podcast guest on open source sustainability, type safety and developer experience.

How Tanner builds

  • Build the tools you need yourself and solve real problems rather than innovating for its own sake.
  • Keep libraries headless and framework-agnostic so they outlive any one UI framework.
  • Ship early so feedback and outside contributors can improve the project.
  • Separate your identity from your code.
  • Fund open source sustainably through sponsorships that pay maintainers.
