Peter Steinberger

PSPDFKit founder turned creator of OpenClaw, the open-source personal AI agent

About Peter Steinberger

Peter Steinberger is an Austrian developer who founded PSPDFKit, a PDF SDK for iOS and later many other platforms. He started it in Vienna in 2011 as a bootstrapped framework and grew it into a company used by large enterprises. In 2021 Insight Partners made a strategic investment of more than EUR 100 million, and Steinberger and co-founder Martin Schurrer stepped back from full-time roles. The company was later renamed Nutrient, and he has described the outcome as a nine-figure exit.

After selling his shares he wrote openly about burnout and a period of feeling lost. In 2025 he returned to building, driven by AI coding agents, and shipped a stream of open-source tools such as CodexBar, a menu bar app that shows Codex and Claude Code usage, along with the summarize CLI, Oracle, RepoBar and many small agent utilities.

In late 2025 he released Clawdbot, a self-hosted personal AI agent that lives in chat apps and can act on a user's computer. It went viral in January 2026, was renamed Moltbot after a trademark request from Anthropic and then OpenClaw days later, and became one of the most-starred projects on GitHub. In February 2026 he joined OpenAI to work on personal agents, while OpenClaw moved to an independent foundation. He lives in San Francisco and blogs at steipete.me.

How Peter builds

  • Build what excites you and release it as open source.
  • Purpose comes from creating things, not from chasing a new location.
  • Let AI agents do the heavy lifting and ship many small tools fast.
  • Changing how people use software matters more to him than building a big company.
