About Oskar Stålberg

Oskar Stålberg is a Swedish indie game developer and technical artist best known for Townscaper, the meditative town-building toy he made largely on his own, and for co-creating the Viking strategy game Bad North. He is widely followed in game development circles for his work on procedural generation, irregular grids and the wave function collapse algorithm.

Stålberg started making small games as a child and describes himself as a self-taught programmer. He graduated from The Game Assembly in Malmö in 2012 and joined Ubisoft's Massive Entertainment as a technical artist on Tom Clancy's The Division, then spent about a year at Ustwo Games before going independent. For years he published small browser experiments such as Brick Block and a planet generator, which became the technical seeds of his commercial games.

In Malmö he founded Plausible Concept with programmer Richard Meredith. Their minimalist real-time tactics game Bad North, published by Raw Fury in 2018, grew out of Stålberg's procedural island generator and was nominated for Strategy/Simulation Game of the Year at the D.I.C.E. Awards.

Townscaper started as a side project that he shared in short clips on Twitter while building it. It entered Steam early access in June 2020 and, by Stålberg's account, sold about 100,000 copies in its first two weeks and roughly 380,000 on Steam by May 2021, against his own expectation of a few thousand. The full release followed in August 2021 together with a Nintendo Switch port, then mobile, Xbox and a browser demo. The game has no goal or fail state: players click on an endless sea and an algorithm decides how each block becomes houses, arches, stairs and gardens.

Since Townscaper Stålberg has continued to update it, shown VR prototypes and given talks on tile-based generation at conferences such as IndieCade Europe, Konsoll and the Sweden Game Conference. He matters to indie makers as proof that a very small, beautifully constrained toy, built in public, can outsell far bigger productions.

How Oskar builds

  • Build a technical toy first and look for the game inside it later.
  • Let algorithms do the detail work so the player only makes simple, expressive choices.
  • Share small development clips publicly; the audience forms before launch.
  • Constraints such as tiny islands or one-click input make systems easier to love.
