About Kai Brach

Kai Brach is a Melbourne-based designer and independent publisher best known as the founder of Offscreen, a print magazine about the human side of technology, and the creator of Dense Discovery, a weekly newsletter on design, technology, urbanism and sustainability that has run every week since September 2018.

Brach spent about ten years as a web and UI designer before deciding he wanted to make something more tangible than ephemeral digital work. In roughly six months he turned himself into a print publisher, and the first issue of Offscreen came out in early 2012. He conducted and edited the interviews, designed every page and built his own distribution network to independent stockists around the world, largely as a one-man operation funded by readers, patrons and a handful of values-aligned sponsors instead of advertising.

Offscreen became a cult favourite among designers and developers, and Brach wrote openly about the economics of indie publishing, including a detailed post on what he called indie magonomics. Over time the magazine's focus shifted from profiling web makers to questioning big tech, growth culture and the ethics of technology. He paused Offscreen in September 2018 after issue 20 to give himself space, later resumed it, and in December 2021 put issue 25 on hold indefinitely when soaring printing and shipping costs made publishing unworkable; a planned handover to co-editor Patrick Tanguay was paused too.

Dense Discovery grew out of his earlier newsletters (The Modern Desk and Offscreen Dispatch) and became his main project. Each issue mixes apps, books, design inspiration, urbanism and essays on a more humane, sustainable future, and it is supported by readers and carefully chosen sponsors. To mark the 300th edition in August 2024, Brach launched the DD Lounge, a community space for supporters.

Brach is a model for creators who want a small, independent media business built on taste and transparency rather than scale, ads or algorithms.
