About Julian Gargicevich

Julian Gargicevich is an Argentine software engineer and app founder best known as the co-founder of Gravl, an AI personal-trainer app for strength training that reported more than $440,000 in monthly revenue and over 70,000 paying subscribers while staying bootstrapped.

Gargicevich grew up in Argentina around fitness, since the family owned a fitness center, and has trained for most of that life. Gargicevich worked as a software engineer, including at Atlassian and for Australian investment firms, co-founded an influencer marketing agency with two friends, and ran performance marketing campaigns for mobile games and apps. That mix of engineering and paid-acquisition experience shaped how Gravl was built and grown. Gargicevich is based in Sydney, Australia.

The idea came from using a leading workout-planning app. Gargicevich liked its interface but found its training logic odd and in places unsafe, so the plan became to build a similarly clean app with a proper workout engine underneath. The first version, originally called Gains AI, launched in late 2023 after two to three months of work. Gargicevich wrote up the technical build in detail on Reddit, which brought the first few thousand users almost overnight.

Gravl generates a personalised strength plan, coaches users through each session and adapts weights and volume as they progress, on iOS, Android and Apple Watch. It is built with React Native and Expo on a .NET backend and uses OpenAI models. Growth came from paid acquisition on Meta and TikTok, user-generated video content and localised campaigns in Latin America and Southern Europe, with pricing around $15 a month or $80 a year after a free trial. The team grew from three people to about 13.

Gravl is one of the clearest examples of an indie AI consumer app competing head-on with venture-funded fitness apps, and Gargicevich's openness about the Reddit launch and the paid-ads engine has made the story a reference point for app makers.

How Julian builds

  • Improve on a proven product: keep what users love about the leader and fix what is broken.
  • Launch quietly where builders gather and explain how you built it.
  • Treat paid acquisition as an engineering problem and localise for markets others ignore.
  • Get the core logic right; in fitness that means safe, sensible programming.
