About Flavio Copes

Flavio Copes is an Italian software engineer and independent educator best known for his free programming handbooks, his blog of more than 2,100 web development tutorials, and his paid cohort courses, including the Bootcamp and the AI Workshop. Everything he has built has been bootstrapped, with no venture capital and no staff behind the personal brand.

Copes first programmed on an Amiga, became a Linux fan in 1997 and published his first project, an Italian Linux site, in 1999. After a degree in computer engineering he started his own company in 2007, doing client work, writing an Italian web development blog and selling a video course on building Joomla sites from a platform he coded himself. His first real software business was JooCode, a portfolio of Joomla extensions bought by thousands of developers. He then made about two dozen iPhone and iPad apps and six Mac utilities, which by his own account paid for little more than the Apple developer membership.

In 2017 he started writing again, and in 2018 he focused his site on JavaScript and web development. The tutorials turned into handbooks on JavaScript, Node.js, HTML, CSS, Go, Python, C, Linux and SQL, released as free online books, PDFs and EPUBs, and later collected in The Valley of Code. From 2020 he ran his JavaScript Bootcamp as a cohort course, rebuilding the course platform several times along the way. He says his blog has had tens of millions of visitors and that he has taught tens of thousands of students.

Today he teaches building apps in the Bootcamp, AI coding agents and developer workflows in the AI Workshop, and how to turn skills into an independent income in Internet Business Lab. He also created the AHA Stack, an approach to full-stack apps with Astro, htmx and Alpine.js, and in 2026 has been shipping a stream of small Mac apps, Chrome extensions and open-source tools built with AI agents.

Copes shows how steady, practical writing can grow into a durable one-person education business, and he is unusually open about the products that failed along the way.
