About Drew DeVault
Drew DeVault is a free-software developer who founded SourceHut, a suite of open-source tools for software development including git and Mercurial hosting, mailing lists, bug trackers and continuous integration. SourceHut is funded entirely by user subscriptions and consulting and has never accepted private investors; it has published financial reports showing it is profitable while stating that profit is not its goal.
DeVault is also known for creating the Sway Wayland compositor and wlroots, and for leading the Hare programming language. In 2025 SourceHut moved its business operations and revenue to the Netherlands and began billing in euros, running almost all of its infrastructure in Europe.
He writes a long-running blog about free software, open-source business models and his projects, and does not use X.
