About Louis Lam

Louis Lam is a Hong Kong-based open-source developer best known as the creator of Uptime Kuma, a self-hosted monitoring tool that has become one of the most popular open-source projects on GitHub, with more than 90,000 stars. He also built Dockge, a manager for Docker Compose stacks with about 25,000 stars.

Lam started Uptime Kuma in July 2021 as a personal project. He wanted something like UptimeRobot that he could run on his own server, but found the free hosted tier too limited and closed source, and the closest self-hosted option, statping, outdated and unstable. The result was a monitor with a polished, reactive web interface that checks HTTP(S) endpoints, TCP ports, keywords, ping, DNS records, push heartbeats and even game servers, sends alerts through dozens of notification services and publishes public status pages.

The project took off almost immediately among self-hosters and homelab enthusiasts. Version 1.0.0 shipped on July 11, 2021, it passed 1,000 stars within weeks and 20,000 within a year, and an ADMIN Magazine feature reported more than 127 million Docker pulls. Lam remains the lead maintainer, coordinating a large group of contributors, and shipped Uptime Kuma 2.0 on October 20, 2025, with releases in the 2.5 line continuing through October 2026. The project is MIT licensed and accepts support through GitHub Sponsors and Open Collective.

In October 2023 Lam released Dockge, which brought the same easy, reactive interface to managing docker-compose.yaml stacks, followed by smaller tools such as an RDP portal for Windows, AkaiGrid for browsing video folders and its-mytabs, a self-hostable guitar tab player released in 2025.

Lam matters to indie makers as an example of how one developer scratching a personal itch can build a free tool that displaces paid SaaS for hundreds of thousands of users, carried mostly by word of mouth in the self-hosting community.

How Louis builds

  • Build the tool you wish existed when the free options are too limited.
  • Self-hosting should feel as polished as a paid SaaS product.
  • Keep setup to a single Docker command.
