About Zeke Gabrielse

Zeke Gabrielse is an American software developer best known as the founder of Keygen, a software licensing and distribution API used by developers to add license keys, device activation, entitlements and secure updates to their apps. He started Keygen as a side project in 2016 and has run it as a bootstrapped company from Springfield, Missouri, ever since.

Before Keygen, Gabrielse made his living building and maintaining web apps. He began Keygen in 2016 and, by his own account, went nearly a year without a single paying customer. In a 2021 post marking five years, he wrote that he nearly quit many times but stuck with the idea, and warned other founders against giving up on good ideas too early or expecting overnight success.

Keygen is a Rails application that offers licensing for desktop apps, Electron and Tauri apps, Go programs, container images, Node, Python, PHP and Ruby packages and more, plus artifact distribution and a self-hostable relay for offline and air-gapped environments. Gabrielse took the unusual step of opening the source of an existing closed-source business: in 2023 he made Keygen source-available under the Elastic License, and in August 2024 he relicensed it under the Fair Core License, becoming one of the early advocates of the Fair Source movement. Developers can self-host the Community Edition for free or pay for Keygen Cloud or the Enterprise Edition.

Keygen also gives back. It has donated to open-source projects since 2021, publishes small Rails libraries such as typed_params and request_migrations, and joined the Open Source Pledge in 2024. Gabrielse writes candidly on the Keygen blog about burnout, luck, pricing and the realities of running a solo company.

He matters as a long-running example of a solo, bootstrapped developer-tools business that grew slowly for years and helped popularize fair source licensing.

How Zeke builds

  • Don't quit a good idea too early; most founders give up before they've learned enough.
  • There are no overnight successes; growth usually takes years.
  • Licensing is part of packaging and should be easy for developers.
  • Pay back the open-source projects your business is built on.
