Spencer Fry is an entrepreneur best known as the founder and CEO of Podia, the all-in-one platform creators use to sell online courses, digital downloads, memberships and webinars. Before Podia he co-founded Carbonmade, the online portfolio site for artists and designers, and he describes himself as a four-time founder with three exits.
Fry started early. He sold an early web business, TypeFrag, before moving to New York at 22, which made him a millionaire. He then built Carbonmade with Dave Gorum and Jason Nelson, which became a profitable, bootstrapped portfolio platform; over the following four years his co-founders bought out his stake. He also created Uncover, a B2B product described as a forerunner of Foursquare, which he later said he did not enjoy building.
In November 2014 he started a new company called Coach, first built for a friend who tutored GMAT students. Most early customers turned out to be creators rather than coaches or tutors, many of them found through Craigslist, and Justin Jackson helped bring in the next wave. Fry relaunched the product as Podia in December 2017, saying the old name was hard to find on Google. About two years in, he took outside investment, although his earlier companies had been bootstrapped.
Podia grew into one of the best-known creator platforms. In 2024 Fry marked Podia's tenth anniversary and wrote that the company had recommitted to working like a startup, and in 2025 he argued that creator businesses need focus rather than ever more AI features.
Fry has blogged since 2009, mostly about building calm, customer-focused software. For indie makers he is an example of a repeat founder who keeps choosing to run his own company.
