About Peldi Guilizzoni

Giacomo "Peldi" Guilizzoni is an Italian software entrepreneur best known as the founder and CEO of Balsamiq, maker of the Balsamiq Wireframes sketch-style mockup tool. Balsamiq has never taken outside funding and is one of the longest-running examples of a calm, profitable, bootstrapped software company.

Before Balsamiq, Peldi was a senior software engineer at Adobe in San Francisco. He built the first version of the tool to solve his own problem of sketching interfaces quickly, founded the company in March 2008 and launched the product that June. To keep costs low while getting started he moved from California back to Italy, and Balsamiq's "non-office office" headquarters is still in Bologna.

The product took off quickly. Wikipedia cites revenue of almost $5 million in 2011 and $6.4 million in 2015, with a team of around 30. Balsamiq Wireframes runs on desktop, in the browser through Balsamiq Cloud, and inside Confluence and Jira, and the company says it has counted more than 1.4 million purchases in 204 countries and territories, with 16,000+ teams using it each month.

Peldi is known for running the company on his own terms: async work by default with a one-hour daily overlap, a minimum vacation policy, profit sharing and small project teams with real decision-making power. He has spoken openly at Business of Software and MicroConf about growing from "rookie CEO" to running a mature company, about turning down offers to sell and about rewriting the product.

Nearly two decades on he is still Balsamiq's founder and CEO, now adding AI features and an MCP server to the wireframing tool. For indie founders he is a reference point for staying small on purpose and treating a software company as a long-term craft business.

How Peldi builds

  • Stay bootstrapped and independent so the company can be run for the long term.

  • Talk to customers directly instead of leaning on analytics.
