Apple Music remote for macOS styled after QuickTime 7 on Mac OS X Tiger.
Mac developer behind retro Apple Music remotes and PDX Transit
Mario Guzmán is a Portland, Oregon based developer and designer known for pixel-perfect, nostalgic Mac utilities that control Apple's Music app. Each one recreates a piece of classic Apple software in native code, drawn with Core Graphics and Core Animation rather than old bitmaps so they look sharp on Retina displays.
The series began in mid-2021 with Music Widget, a replica of the Mac OS X Tiger iTunes Dashboard widget. It was followed in 2022 by Music MiniPlayer, modeled on the iTunes 10 mini player, and Music Remote, which revives the short-lived Music Player from the Mac OS X Public Beta. In 2024 he released QuickTune, a remote styled after QuickTime 7 on Tiger. The apps are free hobby projects and have been covered by MacStories, Cult of Mac and Mac|Life.
He also makes PDX Transit, a TriMet transit app for Portland on Mac, iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. The Mac version arrived on the App Store in 2018, and a rewritten next-generation iOS and watchOS version followed in 2025.
Beyond apps, he publishes Mac design guidelines on layout, toolbars, sidebars and inspectors to help developers build interfaces that feel native on macOS, and shares AppKit sample code such as an NSDockTilePlugIn example.
