Lucas Pope

Solo designer of Papers, Please and Return of the Obra Dinn

About Lucas Pope

Lucas Pope is an American game designer known for small, experimental games that turn unusual mechanics into gripping experiences. He grew up in Virginia, studied mechanical engineering at Virginia Tech, co-founded the studio Ratloop in the late 1990s and later spent several years at Naughty Dog building tools for the Uncharted series.

In 2010 he left Naughty Dog and moved with his wife, game developer Keiko Ishizaka, to Saitama, Japan, to make games independently. His breakout was Papers, Please (2013), a dystopian border-inspection game that won the IGF Seumas McNally Grand Prize and, by Pope's own announcement for its tenth anniversary, sold more than 5 million copies.

His follow-up, Return of the Obra Dinn (2018), a 1-bit insurance-investigation mystery aboard a ghost ship, won him a second Seumas McNally Grand Prize and appeared on many best-of-2018 lists. More recently he released Mars After Midnight (2024) for the Playdate handheld. Pope is also known for detailed public devlogs about his design and tech experiments.
