About Geoff Roberts

Geoff Roberts is an entrepreneur best known as the co-founder of Outseta, an all-in-one platform that bundles payments, authentication, CRM, email and help desk tools for membership sites and SaaS startups. Outseta is known in bootstrapper circles for an unusual company design: equal pay, chosen hours and real equity for everyone on the team.

Roberts studied writing in college and later earned an MBA. He joined Buildium, a Boston property management software startup, as employee number seven and its first full-time marketer, leading marketing for five years as it grew to about $20 million in annual revenue; Buildium was later sold for $580 million.

Around 2016 he co-founded Outseta with Dimitris Georgakopoulos to fix the tool sprawl he had seen early-stage companies struggle with: instead of stitching together Stripe, a CRM, an email tool and a help desk, Outseta offers them in one product. The company took no outside funding and grew slowly, competing against best-in-class point tools, and it became especially popular with no-code builders on Webflow and Framer.

Nine years in, Roberts told Indie Hackers that Outseta is a low seven-figure business. Everyone at the company earns the same salary, $210,000, chooses to work anywhere from one to five days a week, receives profit sharing and owns a material stake of between 2% and 29%, with equity offered on the same terms as the founders. He has been open that reaching profitability under this model was not easy.

Roberts lists San Sebastián, Spain as his home. He writes and speaks regularly about company design for bootstrapped founders, and Outseta is a reference point for founders who want to share ownership rather than build to sell.

How Geoff builds

  • Bundle the tools early companies need instead of making them stitch together point solutions.
  • Pay everyone the same and let them choose how many days they work.
  • Share ownership widely, on the same terms as the founders.
  • Play the long game rather than build to sell.
