Evan You is a Chinese software developer best known for creating Vue.js, the JavaScript framework, and Vite, the frontend build tool. For eight years he was one of the best-known independent open source developers in the world, funding his work through Patreon and GitHub Sponsors before founding VoidZero in 2024.
You grew up in Wuxi, China, went to high school in Shanghai and moved to the United States for college. He studied studio art and art history at Colgate University, then earned an MFA in Design and Technology at Parsons School of Design, where he learned JavaScript. He joined Google Creative Lab in New York in 2013 and moved to the Meteor Development Group in 2014.
While at Google he started a lightweight alternative to AngularJS. The first commit was in July 2013 and Vue was announced in February 2014. In 2016 he quit his job to work on Vue full time, becoming one of the first developers to support a major open source project through Patreon crowdfunding. Vue 3 shipped in September 2020, and in the same year he released Vite, a fast dev server built on native ES modules that spread well beyond the Vue ecosystem.
In October 2024 he founded VoidZero to build a unified, Rust-based JavaScript toolchain around Vite, Vitest, Rolldown and Oxc, raising a $4.6 million seed round led by Accel. On June 4, 2026, Cloudflare acquired VoidZero; You and the team joined Cloudflare, with the projects staying MIT-licensed. Because his main job is now at Cloudflare, IndieMakerList lists him as a former maker.
You is based in Singapore. His path from Patreon-funded solo maintainer to venture-backed founder is one of the most-cited examples of making a living from open source.
