Don't: No, use a product Don't run your company's books on a vibe coded accounting app; build one to learn double-entry bookkeeping, and keep the real books in maintained software.
A ledger with accounts, journal entries and a profit and loss report is a good learning project. But accounting software is only useful if it is correct: bank feed reconciliation, tax rules, period locking, audit trails and reports your accountant and tax authority accept. A subtle bug can misstate taxes for years before anyone notices. The money saved is small compared with that risk.
QuickBooks is accounting software for small businesses: bookkeeping, bank feeds, invoicing, expenses, reports and tax preparation. This page is about building your own version for personal or internal use, or to learn how this kind of product works, not about copying QuickBooks to compete with it. How we grade.
Difficulty is for a solo builder using an AI coding tool. Skip means not worth building yourself.
| Feature | Difficulty | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Chart of accounts | Easy | A table of accounts with types. |
| Journal entries | Medium | Enforce debits equal credits in the database, not just the UI. |
| Bank CSV import and categorization | Medium | Dedupe imports and keep the raw rows. |
| Reconciliation | Hard | Matching statements to entries with edge cases like split payments. |
| Financial reports | Medium | P&L and balance sheet from the ledger; easy to get subtly wrong. |
| Live bank feeds | Hard | Aggregator contracts, OAuth flows and data security obligations. |
| Tax returns and filings | Skip | Jurisdiction-specific and liability-bearing; use software or an accountant. |
| Payroll | Skip | See the Gusto page; a separate compliance problem. |
Your own version vs QuickBooks, at personal or small-team scale.
Simple Start: $38/mo
$38 a month regular price (50% off for 3 months at the time of checking); Essentials $85 and Plus $140 a month.

| Running cost | Per month | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting (Vercel, Render or Replit) | $0–$20 | Fine for a learning project. |
| Database with backups (Supabase Pro) | $0–$25 | Financial data needs reliable backups if you ever rely on it. |
| Total | $0–$45/mo | Saves up to $456 a year vs QuickBooks Simple Start; at the top of the range it costs $84 a year more. |

Helps you read and understand the code as you learn accounting concepts.
Easy place to run a self-contained learning app with a database.
Paste it into your tool, then ask for a plan before any code. Edit the specifics to match what you need.
LEARNING PROJECT, not for real bookkeeping. Build a double-entry accounting app so I can learn how accounting software works. Stack: Next.js, Postgres (Supabase), Supabase auth. Data model: accounts (id, code, name, type: asset, liability, equity, income, expense), journal_entries (id, date, memo, locked), journal_lines (id, entry_id, account_id, debit_cents, credit_cents), bank_imports (id, raw jsonb, imported_at, entry_id null). Features: - Seed a small chart of accounts for a freelancer - Create journal entries; a database constraint or trigger rejects entries whose debits and credits do not balance - Import a bank CSV, keep raw rows, and suggest a category account for each - Profit and loss and balance sheet reports for a date range - Lock a period so entries in it cannot be edited - An append-only audit log of every change - A page explaining each report in plain language for learning Security: single user, Row Level Security, all writes server side, money in integer cents, unit tests that assert the trial balance always sums to zero. Show a banner that this is a learning tool and not tax or accounting software.
AI tools often get these wrong by default. Check each one before anyone else uses the app.
They went far past the prototype: support, payments, reliability and years of iteration. Their profiles show what that took.

You learn double-entry bookkeeping, database constraints and why audit trails and period locks exist.
Don't. Don't run your company's books on a vibe coded accounting app; build one to learn double-entry bookkeeping, and keep the real books in maintained software.
A working personal or internal MVP takes about 10 h–3 days with a tool like Claude Code. A polished version you would rely on every day takes about 25–75 days, mostly spent on correct double-entry rules for every transaction type.
Expect $0–$45/mo at personal or small-team scale (hosting (vercel, render or replit), database with backups (supabase pro)). QuickBooks Simple Start costs $38/mo (checked 2026-11-03), so the most you would save is $456 a year, before counting your time.
You can build one to learn, but running real books on it is risky. Errors can affect tax filings, and accountants usually expect standard software exports.
Correctness over time: reconciliation, tax rules, locked periods and audit trails. The screens are the easy part.
Many freelancers use simpler bookkeeping or invoicing tools, or a spreadsheet plus an accountant. Pick based on what your accountant supports in your country.
Building your own tool that solves the same problem is common and generally fine. Copying QuickBooks's code, design assets, brand name or content is not. Use your own name and design, respect their terms of service, and get proper advice if you plan to sell it. This page is not legal advice.
