About Wan Hazmer

Wan Hazmer is a Malaysian game designer and director best known as the co-founder and CEO of Metronomik, the Kuala Lumpur studio behind the rock-versus-EDM action game No Straight Roads, and before that as lead game designer on Square Enix's Final Fantasy XV.

Hazmer built his career in Japan at Square Enix, where he was a game designer on Final Fantasy Type-0 and then lead game designer on Final Fantasy XV. He left the company and Japan because he believed Malaysia had plenty of talent and wanted to prove that a team there could ship a full-scale console game. In 2017 he founded Metronomik in Kuala Lumpur with his cousin Daim Dziauddin, a concept artist who had worked on Street Fighter V, with a mission to make music-driven games.

Hazmer came up with the core idea for the studio's first game: an indie rock band fighting an EDM empire that has taken over a city. With a team of about 20, support from the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation and an Epic MegaGrant, Metronomik built No Straight Roads in Unreal Engine, with Hazmer as game director and Dziauddin as creative director. Published by Sold Out, it launched in August 2020, and an expanded Encore Edition followed.

In 2021 Metronomik announced its second game, Ondeh Ondeh, an audio-centric adventure. Now titled Ondeh Ondeh Kaya's Tasty Tale, it is a rhythm-and-puzzle action-adventure set in a world inspired by Southeast Asian culture and food. Bandai Namco Entertainment is publishing it, and a trailer in the September 2026 Nintendo Direct confirmed a 2027 release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. Hazmer divides his time between Kuala Lumpur and Tokyo.

Hazmer matters because he is one of the few designers to leave a AAA lead role in Japan to build an original studio in Southeast Asia, and Metronomik has become a flagship for the Malaysian games industry.
