About Elon Musk

Elon Musk is a South African-born entrepreneur who runs or founded several of the most closely watched technology companies in the world: Tesla, SpaceX, xAI (maker of the Grok models), the social network X, Neuralink and The Boring Company. He is not an indie maker in any usual sense. He is on IndieMakerList as a fun pick: few builders act as independently, or ship as loudly in public on X, as he does.

Musk co-founded Zip2 and X.com, which became part of PayPal, before founding SpaceX in 2002 and joining Tesla as an early investor and later CEO. SpaceX built the reusable Falcon 9, the Starlink satellite internet network and the Starship rocket, whose Super Heavy booster was first caught by its launch tower in October 2024. Tesla grew into the largest maker of electric cars and now pitches itself around self-driving robotaxis, the Cybercab and the Optimus humanoid robot.

He bought Twitter in 2022, renamed it X, and founded xAI in 2023. xAI absorbed X in 2025, and in February 2026 SpaceX acquired xAI in an all-stock deal ahead of a planned SpaceX IPO. In 2025 he also led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under President Trump before stepping back.

Musk is known for very ambitious public timelines, especially for self-driving cars, Mars missions and AI, many of which have slipped by years. IndieMakerList tracks those forecasts on his predictions page.
