About Ajay Ramachandran

Ajay Ramachandran is an Ottawa-based developer best known as the creator of SponsorBlock, the open-source browser extension that skips sponsor segments in YouTube videos, and of DeArrow, which replaces clickbait titles and thumbnails with crowdsourced ones.

Ramachandran built SponsorBlock in July 2019 out of frustration with an intrusive sponsor read. Viewers were already posting comments with the timestamps where ads started, and SponsorBlock turned that habit into a system: one user submits the start and end of a sponsored segment, and the extension skips it for everyone else. Other users vote on submissions, and the segment database and API are public, so other apps and YouTube clients can reuse them.

The idea spread fast. Mozilla featured SponsorBlock in its Firefox extension spotlight in July 2020, and the extension grew to cover intros, outros, reminders to subscribe, filler and more. As of October 2026 the Chrome Web Store lists more than 2 million users and Firefox reports over 800,000 average daily users, while the main GitHub repository has about 14,000 stars.

In June 2023 Ramachandran launched DeArrow, which applies the same crowdsourcing approach to YouTube's titles and thumbnails, aiming to make them accurate and less sensational. An unlimited DeArrow license costs $1. The projects are funded by donations and DeArrow sales, and Ramachandran writes that this support, after graduating from university, made it possible to work on SponsorBlock and DeArrow full time. Ramachandran also lists Better Transit Ottawa, a group pushing for better public transit, among current projects.

SponsorBlock is a notable example of a young indie developer turning a personal annoyance into one of the most used open-source browser extensions, sustained by its users rather than by ads or investors.
