About Kenny Sun

Kenny Sun is a Brooklyn-based indie game developer best known for BALL x PIT, the 2025 brick-breaker roguelite that sold more than a million copies within two months. Before that breakout he spent a decade releasing small, inventive games, most of them made entirely on his own.

Sun worked as a programmer at Harmonix, the studio behind Rock Band, before quitting in 2018 to make indie games full time. His first commercial release, the hypnotic platformer Circa Infinity, came out on Steam in 2015, and it was followed by a string of compact puzzle and roguelike games including Yankai's Triangle, Yankai's Peak, Twinfold, Kubrix and Peak's Edge. From June 2021 to June 2022 he also worked as a programmer on Return to Monkey Island.

His first publisher-backed game, Mr. Sun's Hatbox, was released by Raw Fury on April 20, 2023. Sun made it solo, handling design, code, art, animation, sound and music, and described it as a slapstick stealth platformer inspired by Spelunky and Metal Gear Solid V.

BALL x PIT grew out of Sun's fascination with Punball, a free-to-play mobile game he found in late 2021. He combined Arkanoid-style ball bouncing, Vampire Survivors-style upgrades and ball fusion with a base-building meta layer. For the first time he had the budget to hire help, leading a team of six others, and Devolver Digital published the game in October 2025. It sold more than 300,000 copies in five days and passed a million by December 2025. Mobile versions followed in March 2026, BALL x PIT was an Apple Design Award finalist for Delight and Fun in June 2026, and the paid expansion Risen Ballbylon is scheduled for November 12, 2026.

Sun is a good example of the long indie apprenticeship: ten years of small, well-reviewed games built up the craft, contacts and taste that made one big hit possible.

How Kenny builds

  • Take a mechanic you love from another game and fix what bugs you about it.
  • Ship many small games to build skill before betting on a big one.
  • Layer a long-term meta loop on top of a short, punchy action loop.
